BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. (KHSL) – A volunteer fire department in California is preparing to graduate 19 new recruits.
Among them is a retired nurse who is decades older than your average rookie firefighter.
Mary Jarschke, 75, said she joined the program to continue to give back to the community.
“We do a lot of medical calls, the volunteers do, and so I decided that is something that I can do,” Jarschke said. “I’m clearly not going to be the one dragging somebody out of a burning building most likely, but I wanted to do the full program just to know if I could help somewhere, I can.”
