The number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania has decreased from 300,000 in the 1970s to 30,000, leaving many fire companies struggling to respond to fires and other emergencies.
Lower Paxton Township, aiming to reverse that trend, announced Thursday that it is offering money for volunteers to spend more time working shifts at its firehouses.
Since the program started Nov. 1, the fire companies have seen a positive response from within their ranks. Of Lower Paxton’s 48 firefighters, 10 who were previously less active have increased their activity, according to township deputy fire chief Brett Graham. Now the township is hoping the incentives will attract more firefighters.
