Local firefighters responded to a vegetation fire in the south end of Ukiah Thursday that was reported as an escaped control burn near the intersection of Oak Knoll Road and Fircrest Drive.
The fire was reported around 2:42 p.m. June 8 in the 700 block of Oak Knoll Road, and personnel from the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority were first on-scene. The fire was first estimated to be about an acre in size and near a residence, but the flames were soon described as moving up the hill and away from the home.
Personnel from Cal Fire then took over the incident and launched an air attack on the fire, which included dropping water from a helicopter. The latest estimate of the fire’s size was three-quarters of an acre, and by 4 p.m. it was reported to be under control.
