An over-worked fire department in Yreka is pleading for help.
“The demand only continues to grow,” Josh Stanshaw, a volunteer firefighter with the Yreka Fire Department, told the City Council late last month. The meeting, held on Jan. 30, was dedicated entirely to addressing a problem that fire officials say has been building for years.
One after the other, for two hours, current and retired firefighters from Yreka and its surrounding communities laid out an issue they say has become nothing short of desperate.
Burnout starts when a volunteer firefighter ends up responding to 600 calls a year, said Bernie Paul, district chief for the South Yreka Fire District and president of the Fire Chief’s Association. Volunteers like Stanshaw are responding to about 1,000 calls per year. Since joining the YFD in 2021, he has responded to more than 2,200 calls.
