FULL-TIME FIREFIGHTER – 3 POSITIONS
The West Plainfield Fire Department is recruiting to hire three (3) full-time Firefighters – a new classification for our Department. The ideal candidate should be a confident, resilient, flexible, strong team member, able to think quickly under pressure and to communicate effectively. At a minimum, the candidate should have completed a California Fire Academy course of instruction and be an EMT. This individual will be engaged in the prevention, control, and extinguishment of fires and will respond to emergency situations where life, property or the environment is at risk. This position also responds to and renders aid in non-emergency situations as required.
Salary and Hours – Full-Time Firefighter: $56,690.00 annually. The Department operates on a 48/96 schedule and with these new positions will staff a 2-0 engine, supplemented with Volunteer and Reserve Firefighters. An initial week of training (8 hours a day for 5 days) is required. During the one-year probationary period shift assignments will change every four months.

About The Department: The West Plainfield Fire Department is a combination department and responds to roughly 300 calls per year, which number continues to increase, and covers 33 square miles. Hazards in the response area include, but are not limited to: Yolo County Airport, farming operations, development and sale of neuroscience antibodies and other such products, Putah Creek. In addition to small pockets of residential housing, the response area also includes two care centers, an elementary school and church, and numerous small businesses (gun range, skydiving center, aircraft repair, livestock feed and other related sales). Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess the following or show documentation of equivalency:
- Be at least 18 years of age by the closing date of the recruitment period
- Be in possession of a high school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- Be a US Citizen or have proof of a legal right to work in the U.S.
- Have and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, or equivalent
- Have and maintain automobile insurance as required by California law
- Have completed a California Fire Academy course
NOTE: within one year of hire, must obtain California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I or equivalent certification valid in California - Have and maintain a California EMT License
- Must be able to pass a physical performed by a physician, including drug testing and lung function testing
- Have good vision in both eyes, with the ability to distinguish Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) color codes for hazardous materials (e.g., blue, red, yellow, white) and have no depth or peripheral vision impairment
- Must pass background check
Desirable Qualifications:
• Experience working with volunteer fire personnel
• Specialized training in fire science, mechanics, or related field
• Valid Class C (or higher) California Drivers’ License with a Firefighter endorsement or valid California Commercial Drivers’ License with proper endorsements for firefighting equipment
