Without enough volunteers to respond to emergencies, some fire departments are cutting services or even shutting down. Most are changing the way they recruit.
Communities like West Barnstable illustrate why some departments are struggling to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters. “Small towns like ours are losing our young adult populations,” Maruca said. They are moving to where there are more jobs and a lower cost of living
Fire departments also face problems recruiting young people to become volunteer firefighters. Volunteer fire departments are aging, making them less and less capable to respond to emergencies.
